Green Procurement

In line with the Fujifilm Group Charter for Good Corporate Behavior, we support fair trade and free enterprise. In our procurement activities we aim to be open and fair, use rational selection standards, observe the law, conserve natural resources and protect the environment. These principles help us contribute to society and act as a responsible member of the international community.

Background for Initiatives

Our green procurement and purchasing initiative now includes the management of chemical content throughout the supply chain.

We have expanded our green procurement survey to cover management of chemical content that has an impact on the environment.

Standards for green procurement

Our Design for Environment program requires consideration of environmental impact in procurement. We have set green standards for our suppliers and the products we procure. We encourage continuous improvement in application of these standards in supplier organizations and products.

Under our green procurement standards, we expect suppliers to meet nine of the 12 requirements for ISO 14001 certification.

We recommend that suppliers obtain ISO 14001 certification. If this is difficult, we recommend using EcoStage*, EcoAction 21** or KES***.

  1. * EcoStage: An environment evaluation and support system to assist small and medium-sized companies in creating and operating environmental management systems. This provides transparency without the complexity of ISO certification. It uses a five-stage approach based on ISO 14001 that makes it easy for small and medium-sized companies to introduce and step up their environmental efforts.
  2. ** EcoAction 21: An environmental system for setting objectives, taking action, summarizing and evaluating results, and preparing reports. It provides a certification and registration framework based on the EcoAction Guidelines established by the Ministry of the Environment. It is easy for small and medium-sized companies to use.
  3. *** KES: The Kyoto Environmental Management System, recommended by the Miyako Agenda 21 Forum.

Management of chemical content

From green procurement to management of chemical content

We are broadening our green procurement program's scope to cover chemical content management throughout the supply chain, including our own processes and products. This is necessary to satisfy regulatory requirements in world markets. The European Union's Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directives are examples.

Background

A single Fujifilm product can easily contain 1,000 to 20,000 parts. If any part contains harmful chemicals, disposal methods must be used to prevent toxic waste. Directives such as Europe's RoHS restrict the use of hazardous materials.

Management of chemical content and seminars

Our green procurement and purchasing activities now include the management of chemical substance content throughout the supply chain, including processes within Fujifilm. Since fiscal 2004 our green procurement survey also covers management of chemical content having an impact on the natural environment.

In 2005 we established our Basic Regulations for Management of chemical content and Guidelines for Management of chemical content.

We have raised awareness within our group by creating internal systems and conducting in-house seminars. Since 2005 we have also held seminars for suppliers who handle chemicals covered by RoHS.

Several thousand suppliers provide parts and materials to Fujifilm. To efficiently survey the vast number of items involved, we have introduced a Web-based self auditing system. Suppliers audit themselves and, via the Internet, register information on their management of chemical content.

Web-based self-audits cover the green standards of suppliers as well as their management of chemical content. We are moving ahead with this approach in Japan and have begun international trials. Based on the results of audits and, when necessary, on-site inspections, we supply guidance to suppliers to improve performance.

In 2006 we prepared a database to monitor chemical content management survey results. This is helping us improve our Web-based self-audit system and boost our green procurement program's effectiveness.
